Melanie Babendreier, founder of Joyful Obedience Dog Training, studied under Tom Mitchell, Veterinary Behaviorist, and Lauren Langman, World Champion Agility Competitor, of Absolute Dogs, Devon, England.
“I don’t believe that dogs are stubborn, or mean, or bad. They just want to know what they’re supposed to do,” she says. “So many people are frustrated with their dog’s behavior, but have never shown them, or don’t know how to show them, what they DO want. You can see the relief in the dog’s eyes when they realize how easy it can be to make their owners happy.”
Instead of forcing dogs to behave, Melanie changes dogs’ brains through exercises and games that are fun and enticing. She looks for what individual dogs need and trains specifically for that. For example, if a dog is worried and scared of their environment, Melanie will work on the dog’s confidence and optimism. If a dog is hyper-vigilant and barking at the window incessantly, she’ll teach them to seek calmness.
Melanie’s training is all about giving dogs the choice to do what she asks. Dogs respond to her positively because she comes to them with patience and kindness. She does not believe in adverse training, but instead finds a way to engage dogs through joyful exercises and games.

1:1 Sessions last about an hour. The first time I meet you and your dog, I learn a lot:
What is the relationship with your dog like ? Does your dog listen to you?
How much “try” does your dog have?
Is your dog food-motivated, toy-motivated, or even motivated by your voice?
What are the challenges we’re facing and what goals do you have for you and your dog?
After a session, I will send you an email with a synopsis of our lesson and an opportunity for you to ask any questions.
Focused around your challenges and goals, I will come up with a plan designed and customized specifically for you and your dog.
Students will be sent a list of required supplies a week before classes commence.
Classes last about an hour. During that time, we will work as a group, as well as individually, and I will spend time with each participant, being sure to answer questions and brainstorm when people and/or dogs are having a hard time.
The first class may be without dogs, unless it’s a follow-up class and I know the dogs, people and situations.
Classes will be kept to a minimum of 4 dogs and owners. Social Distancing will be practiced, and masks worn at all times. Hand sanitizer will be available on site.
The most important thing is to avoid rehearsal! Don’t leave anything where they can reach it.
Puppies jump on people because they’re excited and don’t really understand the difference between people and other dogs. They just have to learn the right way to behave!
Once your dog learns how important you are to them, they will pay more attention to you and not what’s ahead on the walk.
